Today’s job took us to Hurstmonceux, East Sussex, where we were called out to investigate a socket that had stopped working correctly. What we found was a serious but often overlooked electrical fire risk.
The Problem: Overheating Plug & Socket
On inspection, the plug showed clear signs of overheating and burning around the live pin, with visible scorching to the socket front. This type of damage is usually caused by:
A loose internal connection within the socket High electrical resistance creating heat over time Prolonged use of high-load appliances such as heaters, dryers, or dehumidifiers
Although the socket may still appear to work, this kind of fault can develop silently and significantly increases the risk of an electrical fire.
Why This Is Dangerous
Electrical overheating faults don’t always trip the circuit breaker straight away. Heat can build up slowly, damaging insulation and terminals until the point of arcing or ignition. This is why burn marks, discolouration, or warm sockets should never be ignored.
What We Did
As part of this job, we:
Safely isolated the circuit Replaced the heat-damaged socket outlet Inspected and re-terminated the wiring to ensure no insulation damage Advised the homeowner on safe appliance loading and future prevention
The socket was made safe and fully tested before being put back into service.
