It’s been another busy few weeks for SLE Electrical Services Ltd, with plenty of electrical work keeping us on the road around Hailsham, Eastbourne and the surrounding areas of East Sussex.
Recently, we’ve been carrying out everything from consumer unit upgrades and EICR testing to replacing old fluorescent lighting with modern LED fittings.
Here’s a look at some of the work we’ve been getting on with.
Consumer Unit Upgrades
We’ve completed several consumer unit changes recently, replacing older fuse boards with modern consumer units incorporating individual RCBO protection and surge protection (SPD).
A modern consumer unit can provide a significant improvement in protection compared with many older installations. Individual RCBOs also mean that a fault on one circuit is less likely to affect other circuits within the property.
A consumer unit change involves much more than simply replacing the old board. We inspect and test the installation, check the condition of the circuits and make sure the appropriate protective devices are installed.
Once the work is complete, the installation is fully tested and the relevant electrical certification is provided. Where the work is notifiable, it is also notified under Part P of the Building Regulations.
Replacing Fluorescent Lights With LED
We’ve also been replacing a number of older fluorescent light fittings with modern LED alternatives.
Traditional fluorescent fittings have been widely used in garages, workshops, kitchens and utility areas for many years, but LED technology now offers a much more efficient and convenient solution.
Upgrading to LED can provide:
- Lower energy consumption
- Excellent light output
- Instant full brightness
- No tubes or starters to replace
- Reduced maintenance
- A cleaner, more modern appearance
If you have older fluorescent fittings that are beginning to flicker, become unreliable or regularly need new tubes, replacing the complete fitting with LED can often make much more sense than continuing to repair the old equipment.
EICR Testing
Another big part of our recent workload has been carrying out Electrical Installation Condition Reports (EICRs).
An EICR is a detailed inspection and test of a property’s electrical installation. It helps establish whether the installation is in a satisfactory condition for continued use and identifies defects, deterioration or potential safety issues.
During an EICR, we inspect and test areas including:
- Consumer units and protective devices
- Earthing and bonding
- RCD and RCBO protection
- Socket and lighting circuits
- Electrical accessories
- Condition of existing wiring
- Continuity and insulation resistance
- Other aspects affecting the safety of the installation
At SLE Electrical, we believe an EICR should be a proper assessment of the electrical installation rather than simply a certificate.
