Faulty Shower Replacement in Eastbourne – The Importance of Electrical Safety

At SLE Electrical, we recently attended a call-out for a faulty electric shower in Eastbourne, East Sussex. What we found was a serious electrical hazard—one that could have led to a dangerous situation if left unchecked.

The Issue: Burnt Live Cable Inside the Shower

Upon opening the shower unit, we discovered that the live cable had completely burnt through the face of the shower (see images). The wiring inside had overheated to the point where the insulation had melted, leaving exposed conductors and significant burn marks on the terminal.

This is a classic example of why regular electrical testing and correct installation are so important. If the wrong cable size or breaker rating is used for an electric shower, the wiring can overheat and eventually fail—posing a serious fire risk.

Why Did This Happen?

From our assessment, there were a few likely causes:

• Incorrect Cable Size: Showers draw a large electrical load, and if the cable size is too small, it can’t handle the current, leading to overheating.

• Wrong Breaker Rating: If the circuit breaker isn’t rated correctly, it won’t trip when the shower draws too much current. This allows excessive heat to build up in the wiring.

• Loose Connections: Over time, electrical connections can loosen, increasing resistance and generating heat.

How We Fixed It

At SLE Electrical, safety is our top priority. We replaced the burnt wiring and installed a new electric shower that was correctly rated for the existing electrical supply. We also ensured:

✔ Correct cable size to match the power rating of the shower

✔ Proper circuit breaker rating to provide adequate protection

✔ Secure connections to prevent future overheating issues

After completing the installation, we fully tested the circuit to ensure it was safe and compliant with electrical regulations.

The Importance of Regular Electrical Testing

This job serves as an important reminder of why regular electrical testing is crucial—especially for high-power appliances like electric showers. If you notice any signs of electrical issues, such as:

⚠ Flickering lights when the shower is in use

⚠ A burning smell near the shower unit

⚠ The shower cutting out unexpectedly

…it’s time to call a qualified electrician. Ignoring these warning signs can lead to dangerous faults and even electrical fires.
